Another opinionated blog
As Facebook grows as the preferred medium for all communication for people who are not in the same physical location it is still striving to give its user base different forms of interaction with their friends and loved ones. The next feature may come in the form of live video calling which may function similarly to Google’s Video Chat.
With this in mind we should note that there is speculation that Facebook may incorporate a video calling application into its web interface this will allow existing users to partake in video calling with each other in real-time. Sources and Facebook have cofirmed that they have been testing this functionality, but did not confirm if it was going to go live or not.
Bandwidth problems and video calling
This video calling feature could increase Facebook’s bandwidth usage which is already considerably high, for example it takes 847kb, just to load the front page. This means that people in areas with poor bandwidth (South Africa For Example) will not be able to enjoy this video calling feature to the fullest since some people have to resort to using Facebook without most of its features. If released Facebooks video calling could make the whole Facebook experience better bringing people closer than before.
Facebook which is based heavily on ajax will most probably implement this video calling using flash and the interface will most porbably be based mostly in the browser. It is interesting to see how Facebook will grow in future to accommodate all its bandwidth intensive features.
